Local History
The History Group meets on the third Thursday of the month, with the exception of August and December. There is a wide range of speakers throughout the year, some concerning Local History and others outside the local area. We also have one or two evenings where members are invited to put on displays of their own, which they would like to share with the Meeting. In addition to this we have four interest groups, namely, Family History, My Collection, Bricks and Mortar and Military Chest. The second half of the evening normally features one of these topics. It is the aim of the History Group to make local and not so local history an enlightening and knowledgeable experience. In Clevedon we are blessed with a rich source of historical interest, the town’s Victorian architecture is some of the finest in the country, and many of the town’s folk over the years have had interesting tales to tell. Please use our Website, we hope you will find that small item of information that has been eluding you. All members of the Civic Society are welcome to attend our meetings, and a warm welcome is given to any visitors from near or…
Bricks & Mortar
The Bricks and Mortar Research Group holds many records and transcriptions of the Clevedon area. Amongst them are transcriptions of the Poulett Survey of North Somerset Manors, covering the period from 1650 to 1805. If you are an established Civic Society member researching your family history, we are willing to search our records free of charge; if you have such a query contact Derek Lilly but as we are kept fairly busy, it may not be an immediate reply but we will do our best for you. Unfortunately, we do not have the resources to conduct research on behalf of email enquirers but we will pleased to pass on any already-known information.
Family History
Keeping track of your ancestors. The History Group lays great emphasis of the histories of the residents of Clevedon, because through this much of the town history is also preserved. We also have a great interest in military history in order to preserve the memories of the sacrifice made by many of the young men of Clevedon as they went to defend peace and our way of life. We have extracted various aspects of Census data, Births, Marriages and Death entries and Military records; these are available to site visitors in our Records section.
History of Clevedon
Produced by previous webmaster Steve Lambert with the assistance of local Historians father and daughter Derek and Jane Lilly. It is split into seven parts, please click the headings to go to the articles.
Local Maps
Of great interest to many people is the historical development of a place through its maps. We present here a selection of old maps of Clevedon and the surrounding area as stored in the Maps Archive of the National Library of Scotland. Click on the map image or the title to go to the map; it will be opened in a new tab or window on your browser. You can zoom in using the zoom wheel on your mouse or using the +/- buttons in the top or bottom left of the map. Hold left button and move mouse to scroll around map. The maps are Copyright of the individual producers; they are re-used here for non-Commercial purposes subject to the Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) licence. The map images are reproduced with the permission of the National Library of Scotland.
Military Chest
The great wars of the 20th century have always played a large part in the Civic Society’s research. We have also made visits to World War I memorials and cemeteries in France and Belgium. The sections below are our record of some of our areas of interest. Click on the headings to find out more.
